Sound

Sound code
Music is a sound code and the type of music in a text can convey a great deal of information, about the mood and tone of the text. Such as tension and emotions can be helped by the music.
Diegetic sound
Music or sound that belongs within a frame can be considered to be a natural part of the narrative. Not always visible on screen. For example in this scene we can hear the sound of the bear bnottles and the display of card drop to the floor.

Non Diegetic sound
Fight scene (xmen2)
The music was added on afterwards which was in the background while they were fighting, the shooting, the appearance and the disappearance of the (thing), running and swoosh in the corridors and the punches.

Rhythm
Fighting scene (Charlie’s angels)

At first the music had the tension but it was slow, as the climax started to build up in the film the music started to change, the rhythm and beat dropped in and the music started to have a rhythm this helped build the tension.
Silence -Creates tension
In this movie we can clearly see the tension silence creates. The audience get carried away with the film and the silence, when suddenly something surprising happens and scares the audience.
Voice over narration
this is only the trailer of the movie but the girl narrates her story in the trailer, this happens at the opening scene of the film.

Voice overs are usually used to introduce the character, or to express feelings. In this film the girl uses a voice over to express her feelings about her murderer not being caught and her staying in limbo. This makes it an emotional movie as she keeps using a dialog.

Sound Bridge
Sound can be used as a bridge to maintain continuity in a sequence by running a soundtrack under a series of images to link them together, or to create a transition from one scene to another.
Parallel sound
When the sound and the image complement each other.
Contrapuntal Sound
The sound and the image do not complement each other (Happy music played over something sad happening on the scene)
The purpose of music
There are many different ways in which the music is used in films, but the main purpose of music is to create different moods, tones and emotions. Also it can help the audience to understand a scene in more detail too.
Type of sound
Description of sound
Describe the moods it creates
Non diegetic sound

Diegetic sound

Talking ,train moving, footsteps, whistling wind like sound,

Light smooth piano music in the background
Child speaking

After a while rhythm changes
Crow
Airport and crowd sounds
Tension
Something will happen

Innocence when child speaks
Piano light music shows calmness and in thriller movies calm music gives more tension

In the airport while the girl gets lost the rhythm changes get’s faster breathing sound could be herd, this starts to build tension in the audience and they begin to get scared.

  1. Cansu You have demonstrated a basic understanding of the differnt sound techniques. However to expand on your post you must analyse the examples you have given stating where the sound techniques are used and why.
